Just one thing to think about with Starlink is to make sure you have an adequately open space to 'see' a decently large amount of the sky. The antenna is tracking satellites as they whiz by, using an electronically steered beam for much of that steering. So it is not like a traditional stationary orbit satellite that sits constantly at one spot in the sky, with the earth antennas pointed just at that fixed spot.

And of course, as more and more users sign up, the speeds will drop some despite the addition of more satellites. It is a sort of natural 'self-limiting' process for service providers' subscriber numbers. This system will have some flexibility on how the data is routed as it matures to help speeds, but there will be an ultimate limit.

But that massive latency improvement should not change too much!

CARas2020 says: "I love the ocean but I would not mind living inland, maybe Bangor. Who knows still a dream at this point."

Bangor is tidal. It has about a six foot tide, higher at the full moon and new moon - like tonight.

That's curious. WE live in the Mid-Coastal area just west of Belfast and we now qualify for Starlink.

When we first moved here we were misinformed as to the availability of high-speed internet. We had no internet for our first month or so. We had to get in our car and go down to the local town hall and glom onto their service from the parking lot. We were allowed to do that, btw.

I did a lot of calling before we discoverd the DSL service we now have. It's about 25mbs down and averages about 1-2 mbs up. In know........pretty slow. But reliablie so far. WE've only had one or two dropouts that we're aware of. The cost is about $60/month. So, that's pretty cheap.

However, we are looking into the Starlink probably in the Spring when it'll be easier to install the antenna/dish. The cost is about double per month as you've indicated. However, the speeds are also exponentially faster. We're really examining if we need the extra capacity. I'm actually leaning that we may not need it. We don't do much on the .net that's high capacity other than shop or research our projects. But, then again, we may just do it. IT's certainly a wonderful opportunity to those who have no other alternative outside of Huges or the like very expensive satellites up loading!

Musk is now putting download speed expectations s in the 50-150 Mbps range. So not exponentially faster than what you have but faster. As noted, everyone needs to keep in mind that as the user loading grows the speeds will decrease. If you know about cellular data service limits and speeds in suburban/urban areas, then you know the story.

25Mbps is very good for rural service and on the high end for the most advanced ADSL; you must be close to the nearest local switch if you are really getting that. Is that speed the advertised or actually tested speed at your home, using speedtest.net or something similar? Not sure why most of us need it faster; at those speeds, for loading pages, the limits are now becoming the servers at the other end; your performance cannot be any faster than the slowest part.
