From Washington to Maine (Dover-Foxcroft: real estate, apartments, houses)

My wife and I are ready to leave the west coast. Currently in southwest Washington, originally from Idaho. We’ve looked at many different areas around the country and Maine seems to have what we’re looking for. We’d like to grow/raise much of our own food, so at least 10 acres, in an area with a low cost of living. An unorganized township sounds appealing.
Neither of us have been to Maine. We had a two week trip planned starting Memorial Day weekend, just to check things out. We’re now trying to decide when we should reschedule (quarantine lifted) and want to avoid crowds of people in the fall. Hoping that August travel will be ok.
We’re in our 50s, empty nesters. I’m a logger. My wife works for the county. We would be happy to find jobs and move right away, but realize we might be waiting for retirement.
We’ve been reading the forums for a long time and have learned a lot. Any tips for traveling, finding property, etc., would be much appreciated.

If you google logging jobs in Maine, there seems to be work, it might be the biggest industry here , along with tourism.
my neighbor used to work at the sawmill until he got sick with kidney cancer and had surgery, he said he did very well. He drove a skidder or something.
Up here in aroostook county houses can be had very very cheap, some are fixer uppers but many more are very nice, prices run from $30k to $300K.

In the 1990s I owned a home in Bremerton Washington. We were intrigued by the Greys Harbor area and we thought about retiring in that area, But I was spooked by how rapidly home prices and taxes appeared to be rising. So we left Washington.
We finally settled in an Unorganized Township here in Maine, and we love it.

That's good to know. We've been looking but it's kind of difficult from this distance. Online search engines haven't been much help. Hoping to find some other sources when we finally get to visit there.

Prices here are sky high now, and so are taxes. It's the number one reason we're leaving.
FWIW... timber work in the western part or Maine tends to be along and north of US 2. There are a lot of large tracts of corporate owned timber land in that region. So that is one guideline of where to look. I can't say how the timber lands lay once you get east of the Moosehead Lake, and Dover-Foxcroft area.

You're nuts. Maine is going to seem cold and claustrophobic to you - it's a "small sky" place year-round, with low mountains, and unforgiving winters. You're leaving arguably the most beautiful state in the union for an also-ran version of it.

Depends on what you're looking for. We lived in Washington State for a decade and hated it. Over-priced real estate, worst traffic in the nation, out of control crime. Washington State is a great place to live if you're rich. If you're working class or poor, it's pretty awful.
Maine is definitely colder. It's also safer, quieter, and has a better quality of life.

Maine can also be a lot lower Cost-of-Living. I have been seeing in-town apartments here going as low as $450/month.
