Why? Are there are bunch of wild Bangorites (is that right?) racing around downtown?

This is an interesting thread since we are trying to make this decision as to where to live in Maine. Right now it will be between the Portland area and the Bangor area! Keep the posts coming!

Portland has more breweries and restaurants...that pretty much settles it right there!

We just moved to Gorham, a small town in the "greater Portland" area. We absolutely love it! In the month we have been here, I havent actually gone into Portland...and am emersed in setting up housekeeping and exploring my little town. The pace of life is so much slower than where we lived before....everything is kinder and gentler. I am sure Bangor is a wonderful community and did some on line exploration and found real estate was less expensive and varied....but for reasons of family and familiarity with the Portland area and personal comfort....chose Portland.

I know that many think Southern Maine isnt "really Maine" and is indistinguishable from Southern New England.....it doesn't feel that way to me. It is quite unique from NH or Mass. or Rhode Island....where I have lived before....and it is absolutely perfect for me.

Our experience each time visiting Bangor - the drivers come flying by, cut us off, and are totally inconsiderate. Like on the New Jersey turnpike!

No, you have it all wrong. The WORST rude drivers are down here! Most of them don't even have a drivers license let alone insurance. Hell, most of them aren't even US citizens! Getting on 95 is like having a death wish.
Bangor is a walk in the park.

I have noticed that the rules about giving a right of way to a turning car here in Maine is not a practiced courtesy; in fact oncoming cars seem to speed up to prevent you from making a turn before they get to the intersection.

I AM NOT COMPLAINING...I am just noticing that it is very different attitude than that to which I have been accustom. But like I say, I live in a small town and I refrain from giving any lifted hand in the air, palm up gesture indicating...."what are you doing" as the other driver might be my neighbor or someone I will see daily for years to come in non traffic situations...where they give more regard to others.

I've always had a vanity plate, so making any kind of gesture would never have been a good idea. Too easily identifiable, that would be embarassing.
