Today's rain wiped out all the meager snow we had in the Midcoast.

In our 15ish years in Maine, this has been BY FAR the warmest winter to date. It doesn't even feel like winter. It seems more like we are going into the fourth month of Autumn.

But hey, at least the drought is over.

It looks like the snow is finally catching up to us with Thursdays dump and another one coming tonight.

Just a public service announcement for MDOT, we are severely under staffed , most crews are lucky to have a single shift for plowing (no spare drivers, if a storm runs 36 hours then we work 36 hours) So give your self a little extra time to get where your going, or just stay home if possible, and if you do need to go out give the plow some extra room as the driver may be half asleep.

Thank you for working hard to help keep us safe. Stay safe.

I have a quick question about the fishing. Is there a lot of ice fishing and wherever it is you go(any person) How do you know how thick the ice is? I grew up in western PA and as a kid went ice fishing with my dad on the bay --- Lake Erie Presque Isle State Park.

What kind of fish are you catching. I am pretty sure if we caught anything it was perch.

Thanks.

You can ask other anglers and game wardens about the ice. When I'm sure the ice is thick enough to be safe at the shoreline, I step out and chip away at the ice with a chisel. If it's thick enough to be safe, I take another step or three. Chip away. When the water is deep enough that I won't hit bottom when the auger goes all the way through, I start drilling holes. When the hole is through the ice you can measure it with the ruler on the scoop.

We fish for white and yellow perch, smallmouth bass, trout, and burbot most of the time. I like to catch pickerel in an overpopulated pond near my house, kill them, and feed them to the eagles. I'm hoping to fish for togue and/or northern pike this winter.
