Hello,
My wife and I are looking to move to your wonderful state and we are looking for any advice you could give us. I am a disabled veteran and receive a monthly compensation. We are in our 50's, have no children, and we have one yellow lab. We have absolutely no requirements on location. We are looking to rent a small house or apartment. I will be honest and say we have had some issues with credit in the past so our credit is not good due to some medical bills but we are working on it. I do have a relatively high proof of monthly income from two sources. We are at the point in our lives that we just want to move to a quite and beautiful place. We are currently in NJ and are desperate to get out. We are just sick of being here and I have been to Maine a few times while in the military and we want to move there. Sorry this is so long but I wanted to give some details for a better response. If anybody has any advice on towns, locations, ect. we would love to hear them. Thank you in advance.
Jim

ps. I have lived in Mt. Pocono PA, and Buffalo NY so pretty familiar with cold and snow.

Thank you jdoll88

Do you know off any towns or areas that may be more receptive than others? We would love to rent a small house a litte further away from the larger cities.

We are literally thinking of just packing up and going. We dont have alot of furniture and could pack everything in a small uhaul and just road trip it there and stay in a hotel until finding a place.

The forum is full of advice on Maine towns. Have you tried searching the forum? As far as renting is concerned, try some of Maine's newspapers online, classified sections. Craigslist has kind of earned a bad rep for various reasons, but you can search for rentals and check the box to search rentals that allow dogs. I doubt Craigslist is all bad. There are motels that are open year round and allow pets, but don't allow pets to be left alone unattended in the room. This time of year there are also off season rentals where you can rent for the winter but would have to move out by April or May--just another option to think about. Maine has many veteran friendly and dog friendly people. Do you need to be near a VA hospital?

Some Maine homeowners go to Florida for 180 days. They rent out their homes seasonally. It keeps the place heated. These seasonal rents are quite inexpensive. You have a contract going in. You MUST leave by the contract date.
