Yes - I have come up and visited and spent time in Rockland, Owls Head, Camden and Rockport. Did not see Lincolnville last trip up. Typically the houses come on after you leave! But the Bing Maps or Google earth do help - as I have found electrical towers or a tire store right on top of a couple of houses I was considering thanks to the maps.

The best info is from people that live there or live in the adjacent areas . . ...since they are there everyday!

Rockport and Camden are actually my favs. I have bought a (empty) village lot in Camden on a quiet side street near the harbor. Owl's Head is quite nice in my opinion, but seemed a little pricey and there isn't a whole lot there. I have visited Lincoln and did find it very nice, just in a different way than Rockport/Camden.

Not sure what you're looking for in a house or the price range, but I took a look on Camden Real Estate Co web site, which allows you to project search hits on the map, for houses in the $200-300K range. The following might be of interest. Note that all of them have an attached garage, which isn't common, but sure will make it easier to deal with the aftermath of a snowstorm. You don't need to clean the car off, and can just keep the snowthrower in the garage, open the door, fire it up and drive it out into the new snow and do the driveway without needing to dig the snowthrower out or worry about hitting the cars while you work.

This 1960s place is in Camden near Lake Megunticook, and the lake is gorgeous. I haven't been on Molyneaux Rd, but Beaucaire Ave, just down the street is a beautiful woodsy lane with peeks at the lake. Fernald's Neck Preserve near the northern end of the lake is an awesome place to hike but note that they don't allow dogs.

These next two places are new-er, on the back side of Rockport across the street from one another. They are off Rte 17, which could be your way to work, and have big yards for the dogs to run. Beech Hill Preserve isn't too far away and that's a beautiful place to walk, a big hill with open meadows and a view of the ocean from the top. I can also vouch for the Three Dogs Cafe :-).

This is a pic online that shows people picking blueberries at the Beech Hill Preserve - a special day, normally it's not very crowded. That stone hut has been restored very nicely.

Hopefully your realtor can also offer their thoughts. I haven't seen a lot of people posting here from these towns.

To decide if a place is remote... choose a location that to you is NOT remote (does not feel remote). Then figure out the distance and time to drive from remote location to non remote location. Remote and feeling remote is relative and a matter of personal opinion, isn't it? Also consider winter remote as opposed to summer remote. It really doesn't matter what other people consider remote. ... Having said that, I would consider living on Matinicus Island somewhat remote.

Thanks OutdoorLover and mainegrl2011 - great info and perspectives. And, that info on remote vs not remote is very helpful in terms of how to view it.

OutdoorLover - I have discussed those homes with my realtor. The problem is that I am one person (albeit with two big dogs!) and I don't want over 1500 sf . . so many houses are 1800 plus which is more taxes and heat and upkeep. I have gotten rid of so much stuff in my current house and I have grown to like having less. In a home of 2,000 sf . . I will be lost.

That makes sense - good luck in your search. I know that there isn't too much in that smaller stand-alone house segment (same one I was looking at), but they are out there. Here's a recent video from what could be your neighborhood store...
