Well that's it for the smelt shack this year. We hauled it off the ice at noon. Everyone who used the shack tallied their catch on the wall with the date. The final tally was 3146 smelts! By far the best year we have had smelting since we started doing it in 1974. I fished 26 times in a little less than two months. We all had a good time and fed a lot of friends, family, and people I didn't even know! As we were hauling it off a man ice fishing with regular ice fishing traps hauled out a 20 pound Northern Pike right beside our shack. What a monster fish that was.....we didn't even know there were pike in that part of the river! Guess what else we'll be fishing for next year!

That northern got to be 20 pounds by eating his own 3146 smelts! ;-)

The way the rivers are coming up all the shacks ought to be off.

There were a lot of people pulling the shacks off today though there wasn't much of a chance of the ice breaking up. The rain ranoff really fast by the looks of it around here and flooding was minimal

Rainbow Smelts are the only fish in the world that smells like a cucumber. I buy around 90 lbs of them and freeze them in bags filled with water to stop them from getting freezer burn .Then I can eat them all year long. I reall do not care to tell people how good they are because the more people that find out how good they are , means that there will be less and less for me. (hahahha)
They do not smell like a fish unless you keep them in the frigerator for a week. Then will get a fishy smell to them. Cooked fresh is the only way to go. Please do not eat any Rainbow Smelts , because you will get hooked on them ,Like I was. Know I suffer when I run out of them.

I love fried salt-water smelts. Disappointed I rarely if ever see them on restaurant menus.

Ask the Sea Dog Brewing company in Bangor if they have them. They had them on the menu last winter at the Sea Dog in Topsham. They were delicious!
