Yes, of course Heat-Pumps do not work in this region. Contractors have been trying them here for 2 decades. However the new Mini-splits with variable speed compressors are showing promise, as compared to oil heat.

Gotta keep in mind, the ground loop can not be shallow, because the ground here freezes.

People say they work fine during the shoulders, you still need a primary heat source for January-February.

You could install a mini-split heating system along with a wood stove. The mini-split would work in the fall and spring temps for a little less than oil / propane / NG would cost you. Then when it gets cold shift to wood burning, and consume a cheaper fuel.

Your "fuel" with a mini-split is electricity. The cheapest electricity in Maine is Eastern Maine Electric. It is a co-op and the only American owned electric utility in Maine. Mini-splits will not save as much in areas with foreign owned power companies.

I know. We have a public utility Commission. The members are political appointees. They approve rate hikes.
