Yikes, I didn't mean to start a big debate when asking for amounts of excise Tax. I do enjoy reading them though. For me and the places I have contacted since reading the forum.... I HAVE to add that all advice given me by Bydand has been right on the mark. Thanks again to all of you on the forum and all you help with special kudos to Bydand.

Just to chime in with other figures to consider:
When I switched plates from MA to ME (midcoast region) my excise taxes doubled --- on the same old car. The insurance was a couple hundred cheaper though. And I saved a few dollars on the license because ME didn't toss out my old info and issued my "new" license as a renewal. :-)

Motor vehicle inspection is the easy part. Just make sure you have your oil changed every 3,000 miles at a garage that does inspections and think of the garage every time you bake cookies and your inspection sticker will always appear on your vehicle before it's due and your vehicle will always be in top running condition!

Tried to find the excise tax calculator on the Bar Harbor site but couldn't find it. I'm from out of state and thinking of relocating to Maine. I am trying to understand how this excise tax works.

Here you go. Not a calculator, but this is how they determine your vehicles excise tax. Maine Revenue Services: Property Tax -

You can use several different places to find what the MSRP was for your vehicle, this is what the city or town will use to find MSRP

Quote:
WHERE CAN A TOWN GET THE MSRP?

There are several resources for the MSRP that will provide the information on the retail price of a vehicle. New vehicles are required to have a window sticker that must be must be presented on first time registrations.

For used cars, one can use the NADA Guide , the New Car Cost Guide , the Automobile Red Book and the Automobile Blue Book .

Many towns have adopted the software based on the Red Book and can actually use the VIN number in order to get the MSRP of that vehicle.

Coffee and donuts work good too. I'm glad they defeated the latest proposal. I spend bucks to keep my old jalopy in clean non-polluting running shape but not as much bucks as a new vehicle. I simply can't afford it. I know many otheres in the same boat as well. It would be nice if we could all go out and buy the latest "green' vehicle....not consistent with reality.

Default maine auto insurance

My Monte Carlo has reached the minimum value that is taxable, which is $85.00 add $24.00 for the plates and town fees misc. It comes to about $ 125.00 a year for an older vehicle.
