I never saw grits on a menu in Maine or NH. I love grits and have my son send me stone ground grits from South Carolina. They are coarse ground and have some of the husk still in with em, you have to put them in water to let the chaff float to the top and skim it off before cooking them. Also if you are ever traveling down the Skyline Drive scenic highway in Virginia there is an operating grist mill that grinds grits. I think you can order them on line??? In RI i used to get locally stone ground yellow corn meal and it is pretty good too. I love grits for breakfast with my eggs and ham; My son uses them in gourmet cooking, fried to sit other delicacies like fried green tomatoes or grouper and all kind of other stuff--but his cheesy grits are the best!
oh yeah you can't even sell ME .. a relatively NEW grits-enjoyer on instant grits. Yes, in desperation. NO WAY if anything else is available.
Is your son a chef?? Many chefs down here use cous cous which to my mind is .... big grits. LOL !!!!! but they will put on their airs and cous cous so I've bought cous cous at times. Thing is it's TEN TIMES MORE than grits for one fifth the amt.
See, toldya I'm a Mainer. I'm very .... thrifty. I do not like waste AT ALL. I like the old ways. You can keep me fascinated with a working mill or any other device for hours. I'm not the tourist-trap one.
I'll be stopping in VA for that if there's any way possible.

Probably 15 years ago, one of my brothers moved to S. Carolina. Their first morning there, they went out to b'fast. He never thought about where he was and so his plate came with his order, plus grits. Poor guy almost heaved right there. He called the waitress back over and politely asked her to immediately take the plate away and bring back ONLY what he had ordered, definitely no grits, and on a clean plate please.
They still eat at that restaurant quite often, and everyone there knows that when "T" comes in, there will be NO GRITS on that plate.
As for me, I won't even eat oatmeal. Yuck! It's a texture thing.

doubtful at a restaraunt but you probably could get them at the grocery store. the only time i ever had them was visiting TN. i had them with butter and salt yum .
Hashed browns or home fries really do sound a little more tasty than grits.
