I am searching in Boothbay Harbor for land to eventually build my vaca home on. Can anyone tell me Approx cost for a well & septic? I know there are a lot of things to consider/involved.
Also, cost for electric hook up? Yes, there is electric at the end of the road.
After searching for over 2 years, I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. So, I decided to buy land & build a SMALL cabin.
It's been a few years, but I think I paid 5, 000 for my well. As fas as septic goes I paid 28, 000 BUT that included the ground and cement work for a 28×40 basement.
A well may be about 5-6 grand. A septic can vary, depending on where you are and what is required. I wouldn't be surprised to see the septic be around $10,000-. As for electric, call an electrician in that area.
Talk with the neighbors about a well. Some coastal towns have problems with salt infiltration. Every new well draws more water from the aquifer and moves salt water toward not only your well, but your neighbor's wells. The less water you and your neighbors draw the lower the risk of salt infiltration. Running a lawn sprinkler will be frowned upon. You can fill a water barrel from your rain gutter and use that for irrigating your lawn. The deeper you drill your well, the higher the risk of salt infiltration.
Soils vary considerably along the coast. Bedrock is never very far down. If you are lucky enough to be over a gravel deposit your septic cost will be low. And engineered system with raised leach field will be expensive. Before you buy the lot it might be a good idea to have a soils guy check for suitable soils.
A drilled well is more costly (and better) than a dug well. How much it costs will be quoted based on how far they have to drill, per foot (usually $10 - 14 per foot) There is absolutely no way to know what the final cost will be until they actually drill it. Water could be found 25 feet down - or 650 feet down! (speaking from experience - we got that far and then had to hydrofrac, at which point we got 4 gal per min. at 350 feet) You'll undoubtedly be better off than we were - we're nowhere near the coast - - but it just about killed us, budget-wise
I am well inland from your location. I paid around $3,500 for our well.
I did our septic system myself.
Our electric install [one power pole with meter and mains box] was around $800.
Do you have the numbers still? I liked to call and set it up for my land.
