So where do you go if you live in Southern Maine to cut firewood? We just buy a permit here and can go into woods and cut dead trees for firewood. Don't know how it works in Maine. Thanks for the info.

I own and/or manage 150 acres of woodlot. I have far too much dead wood, blow-downs and downed trees.

I go onto 'freecycle' and make offers every now and again, that folks can come here to cut and haul away wood.

When I have made that offer, I may get one or two calls for directions. And for every four calls for directions we will see maybe one guy actually come out to get some free wood.

Does anyone here want some?

The permit, I assume, is to cut in national forests or public lands. That seems to be common in the West, where there is a lot of federally owned land. So far as I know, besides private arrangements like FB is offering, I don't know of anywhere in Maine where you can do that. There is very, very little federal land in Maine — a small section of the White Mountains National Forest along the New Hampshire border and Acadia National Park.

Yes it's for National Forests here in the West.

Forest that offer sounds great! I would show up to chop some dead trees! Thanks for the info-

Wink Plum Creek

If Plum Creek owns any land near you, you can cut salvage wood. A permit costs $10/cord for up to 10 cords.

$10/cord for U-cut does not seem like a good deal to me.

Thats a great deal. Just think of how many people who own lots with no trees like in town. But still need wood for a woodstove.

The best price I have seen this year is $140 a cord; cut, split and delivered near Springfield, Maine. Must be a couple of kids. I have also seen it for $225 a cord and people are buying it.

If a tractor trailer drops a load of tree length and you cut and split it yourself it can go as low as $90 a cord.

I've seen it as high as $240 a cord, cut, split, delivered, here on the coast.
