I know of Kelly and Bonney Staffing agencies, and that there are others out there (Manpower...) -- I'm having trouble finding reviews of the agencies and don't have much temping experience to go on. Is there a good agency out there, or just good practices, that I should look out for as a new temp? I appreciate it

I worked for Bonney for a while in 2008-2009, until the place I was working at hired me direct. It took me a while to get a gig with them because they kept telling me that they had nothing, even though I told them I would take anything. I would go there once a week. After a while, I started going in to the office every *day*. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.

I told the woman "Give me *something*, I'll take *anything*!"

She said "I'm sorry, there just isn't anything in your field."

My response was something along the lines of "Apparently you don't understand the meaning of 'anything'. I will take ANY job you have available. I want to work, I NEED to work, and I don't care what it is, I don't care if it isn't in 'my field'. I will do any job that you can give me."

She looked at me sort of blankly for a bit and then said "Oh. OK."

She called a couple of days later. "Can you go tomorrow to a warehouse? I know it's short notice and it's only for a few hours, but..."

I told her to give me the name and address, I would go and find it that day and be there to work the next. I'm still at that company, now in a management position, and I've been there longer than any other job I've ever had.

The point to the story is that you may have to apply some pressure and show them that you want to work.

That said, it has been my observation that temps are 'throw-aways' around here, a dime a dozen. If somebody doesn't like the way you look at them, you're gone and they get someone else. Maybe it's different for whatever it is that *you* do.

If you're in the Bangor area, I've heard some stories about La Brie's Bakery (from temps that have worked there). According to them, you really need to be a glutton for punishment- long hours and poor treatment, but that's just hearsay- I don't know the truth of it.
