While visiting some grandkids out of state, I went to a place where they had a zebra in the same area as horses and cows. The cows and horses were covered in flies, but the zebras were untouched. The keeper said that scientific research has shown that the zebra's pattern acts as a deterrent to biting flies. When I got home I googled it (zebra pattern flies).

Apparently it's true: research has shown that zebras are not bothered by biting flies because of their striped pattern. Research showed that although biting flies prefer dark coats to white when it comes to animals, the zebra stripes are even more effective than soiid white animals in preventing fly bites.

Ok, so here's my question and please don't laugh: has anyone tried wearing a zebra-stripe material during blackfly season? Wouldn't it be great if this would actually work? (You'd still need bug dope for your hands/face/neck of course.)

Here's one of many articles you can find on zebra patterns: BBC Nature - Zebra stripes evolved to keep biting flies at bay
