Hi everyone! This is my first post, hope it's in the right spot! I am currently in school and will eventually become a Nurse Practioner , specializing in midwifery. I want to open a birth center that can also be used as a community center. I think I would like to be in a fairly rural area. Now, my question is: Is there a place in Maine were you think this is needed?
I could go on and on about all that I would like to offer, but don't want to bore ya'll. Also, if you don't think this is needed in Maine, where would you suggest?
Birthing centers have been incorporated into several hospitals for years now. Many hospitals can not afford the OB and many do not have more than a few beds dedicated to maternity. For these reasons, NICU's are normally found in only the larger campuses.
I know some NP midwifes and they usually work on contract with companies, clinics, hospitals and Dr.'s practices. To open a center yourself, would probably not be affordable. Check with the various associations to get a feel for what's going on.
In Maine, FNP's have a lot of autonomy though, including DEA privileges. Good Luck!
My daughter was looking into midwives while staying with us in Maine. Women in this area (we were told) prefer a midwife but for practical reasons they do deliveries at the hospital. My daughter would have prefered a midwife but because she's had two cesaerean births already, she really isn't a good candidate (she's been told) for a "regular" delivery.
This is true. Natural birth is not as common as it was. This has to do. OB/gyn is a hard practice to do because of the price of insurance and the tremendous technology growth in the field. Any sign of trouble for the mother or infant, usually results in a C-section birth now. It is also a matter of convenience. A mother can schedule a C-section around her schedule.
