This weekend's Bangor Daily News has two articles in it about property taxes.

One story says that the town of Lincoln is lowering it's Mil Rate, which will lower it's property owner's taxes.

Another story says that the town of Millinocket is lowering it's Mil Rate, which will lower it's property owner's taxes.

Are there any other towns lowering their Mil Rates also?

Anyone?

Lewiston had done a fair job of towing the line and reducing the mil rate over the last 5-7 years which when added to inflation was pretty decent. A lot of it was due to new investment and some streamlining. We are however back to where we were when I first came here. The city has committed so much spending with contracts ect., and now the the economy has slowed. The city is going to raise taxes that will blow away all reductions we have seen.

Not for us. We have only 100 tax bills going out each year. It doesn't take much to make our taxes go up.

Some individuals are getting lower tax bills. Towns are not spending less. Let me explaion. As high value waterfront properties are built and sold a town's total valuation goes up. When a Super WalMart comes in a town's valuation goes up. Owners of high value properties pay a lot more in taxes. If spending grows slower than growth, some property owners see their taxes go down.

A mil rate is the number of dollars you pay per $1,000 valuation of your property. If you own a $100,000 property and the mil rate is 17.5 your tax bill will be $1,750, less any reductions for homestead exemption, veterans exemption etc.

Very few if any towns are actually spending less simply because of the costs of all fuels.
