Default another item for the list

Yep, you're right. These back roads do get kinda muddy this time o' year. Not sure which one you'll find more interestin', tryin' to drive down the back roads in your BMW, or tryin' to walk down 'em in yaw loafahs.

I pulled out one of those $60,000 Volvo Cross Country wagons with a turbo engine. The Volvo had a long eye bolt that came in a velvet bag. The owner pulled it out of the bag and I swear it looked like polished stainless steel. He popped out a rubber grommet near the bumper and screwed the eye bolt in. I hooked on my rope and pulled him out with my GMC 4 WD. He asked what he owed me. I told him it was too much fun and he didn't owe me anything. He thanked me and got in to drive off. The Volvo would not move.

Wifey wasn't saying anything, but I think I could see smoke curling out of her ears. I told the Volvo driver to just sit for a minute. Both front wheels were totally packed with good Maine mud-time mud. I got a stick and poked some of the mud out of his polished spokes and there was a rock the size of a goose egg pinched between a spoke and the brake caliper. I had him back up a half inch and popped the rock out of there with the stick. Now he really wanted to pay me, but this was getting better by the minute. He asked where the nearest car wash was. I told him it was down in Lincoln near the WalMart. He took off in a hurry for the car wash. I figure the car wash and I may have saved that marriage.

We don't see many Volvos up here above the Volvo line. When we do it's usually a lot of fun.

I'll bet it's some fun!

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Northern Maine Land Man again. (Oops, more of that point-spreading problem mentioned in a couple of other threads on here. Good story though, Northern.)

"16. So what if everyone in a pickup waves at you? It's called being
>> friendly. How does that concept rate where you come from?"

Seriously true. The first week we were here, up in Lewiston, my son was taking a walk and sneezed. Someone driving by said "Bless you". Then a few days ago I took my not quite 2 year old to the park. When we turned the corner he saw the water on the Eastern Prom and started waving his hands and screeching Wai (his word for water). A man driving by pulled over and parked by us because he thought my son was saying Hi to him and waving and he wanted to say hello back. I've never lived anywhere where people are nice to that degree.

So very true. Even before the folks in Eastport knew my husband's family was from that area, they were so very friendly. My ever quiet husband even got into the mood and started saying hi and stopping to chat on our many strolls. It definitely has the left me with the feeling of coming home even though I've always been an Ohio girl. I am meant to be a Main-ah!!!

A real Mainer has a 4x4 truck with manual locking hubs...

and only locks them in when the mud is up to the running boards and has to stick his arm up to the shoulder in the muck!
