I will be moving to the Portland area in about two years when I retire. One of the activities I plan to participate in is fishing - both inland and ocean. However, since I can't afford to live on the water near Portland, I was wondering about boat rentals. I did a google search and found one boat club that was about $3500 per year for a six-month membership that was good for both Lake Sebago and Casco Bay. That seems a little steep to me. Daily rentals on Lake Sebago run around $225 a day. I don't recall seeing daily rentals for ocean boats. Are there any cheaper rental alternatives?

Boat Rentals in Maine are not all that popular. Leasing is an option. It's a long term committment. Boat yards see a great many new customers come back in form their encounters in the bay with missing outboards, missing outdrives, bent propellers and shafts, gashes in the side etc. It's not like Florida where if you run aground you're most likely going to hit a sand bar. Maine is rocks and mud. Even a well marked channel will have hidden objects you "know" only with experience.
Rentals are thererfore a risky proposition for the boat yards so most of them avoid it altogether. I don't know how anyone could afford to run a boat these days. The costs put them out of reach for most people. $400-$500 for fuel to ride around Casco Bay for a couple of days seems steep to me. I know we won't toss that much money into the water again any time soon! Good luck in your search.
