OK.... I've been hearing for some time about how expensive electric rates are per killiwatt hour in Maine.

So we need to buy a new dryer and my wife was worried about the high rates in ME as opposed to PA. We were going to buy a gas dryer, even though we are a bit uncomfortable about the appliance where it is in the house, and the extra $100 in cost for it.

Anyways, I looked up the killiwatt hour cost according tgo the Maine PUC from october 2011 to march 2012, and found it to be a whopping $0.082 per kw/h.

Then I looked up the rates in PA that I've been paying for years and found that they were only $0.89 per kw/h.

While the Maine rates may have risen with deregulation, they are still more than 10 % lower than the rates in Pennsylvania, and PA has free choice.

Is that the electricity rate or the delivery rate? Maine power companies list those separately, so be careful you are looking at the true cost per Kw/H and not just one part.

From what I see, I think you've misplaced a decimal with the PA rates.

http://www.oca.state.pa.us/Industry/.../ElecGuide.pdf

Most seem to run around 8 cents per kwh.

In Maine if you are on Bangor Hydro it will cost you 8.33 cents for delivery.

MPUC: Electricity: Delivery Rates

Unless someone is paying you to take their power, I don't see how you get it delivered for 8.2 cents.

MPUC: Standard Offer Rates for Bangor Hydro Electric

From these prices it would appear you will pay Bangor hydro 8.2 cents for the power and 8.33 for delivery. PA looks to be about 8 cents total, so I think you will find you bill in Maine about double for the same amount of power.

Eastern Maine Electric has the cheapest rates in Maine. They are a co-op and their customer service is excellent.

They are indeed an excellent company, but they don't service Bar Harbor.

I know Van Buren and Houlton also have their own power companies and their "delivery" rates are super low. Not sure what their power rates are though, they might more than make up for the low delivery rate (Transmission rate actually.)

Total supply and generation in PA is about 0.13 kw/h. Total in Maine is about $0.158 a kw/h.

Got the figures for both genration and supply. While PA is the lowest of the Northeast, its not really lower by a lot. NY is close to 20 cents and CN is not very far behind that.

The difference between Maine and PA is not terribly different. Some judicious use of power, can easily make it up.

Lucky you didn't move out to one of the Islands, some of those are HIGH. Enough so that it would make the NY rates seem like bargain basement prices. Monhegan Island rates are $0.70 Kw/h. No that is not a typo, it is 70 cents a kilowatt/hour.
