We recently bought a home and the lease on the house we previously rented ends on the 31st. We are all moved into our new home and our previous rented home is empty. I was hoping to get by without turning on the heat before the end of the month to save money. After looking at the low temperatures the next few nights I don't think this will be possible. Thoughts?

Shouldn't be cold enough, long enough. I'm shutting of the water at camp this weekend. You should be fine.

Thanks, I am just paranoid and don't want the pipes to freeze or anything. Might prevent the return of that security deposit

After living in Maine for decades I can never remember it getting cold enough in Oct. for pipes to freeze. No worry! Perhaps you could leave the heat set at about 55. That wouldn't cost too much and when you have your inspection for your deposit the house would not have that "dead cold" feeling.

My house has gotten down to 65 at night. Still comfy. If you have any doubts, set your thermostat to around 50 and if it has to kick on, you won't be using a lot, just enough to keep anything from freezing.

You could just set the temperature really low on the thermostat. Just enough so it won't freeze. If the house is well insulated and holds it's temperature well, I'd say set it at 45 or so. Our house in Maine is pretty terrible and we keep it at a low of 55 or so in the winter.
