Heading up to prep my place for the winter, turn off the water, drain traps etc.

Any thoughts about leaving the heat on in the house, or just shut everything down?

With the heat off, you will probably get some mildew. The price off fuel would make me turn off the heat anyway.

If you leave the heat on and don't drain the traps etc, and the power goes off due to an ice storm, what will happen? I can see no reason to leave the heat on.

We turned everything off and down to nothing every weekend in the winter in our cabin in western PA. I remember one time we didn't with the intention of returning the next week, since it was only 3 hours driving away. But it snowed big time and then again and then again, and we never got back out again until sometime in early March. We really regretted not turning everything off then.

No need to worry about mildew in a new house. Mildew needs moist - not just cold - conditions to grow. If the heat is off, just be sure any attic or soffit vents are open. Be sure all the windows are closed up tight, to keep snow or rain out. You want to keep moisture out, but ventilation coming in.

Just for the heck of it, I'd toss around some D-Con or other mouse poison. Mice can get in through the tiniest of openings, and can really cause damage to any furniture you have. Just from my experience....

Actually you can get the mildew from the temp difference between the basement and the upstairs. It's the condensation that can happen.
