and the fact one can watch the Red Sox on tv. I'm not making the trip to Orono just to watch a baseball game. Or any game for that matter. LOL
I do not think the influx of Mass. people to Maine has anything to do with it.

The Red Sox are the closest pro team to Maine. We sure as heck aren't going to cheer for the Yankees!!!! [quote, AlisonL]

Oh no, not those d*** Yankees! Never! Can’t see why people in Maine would pull for the Tigers or the Diamondbacks, or anyone else, either, even if they wouldn’t view those teams with the special loathing reserved for the Yankees.

Of course, most sports fans will tend to follow the teams that are closest to where they live, or the teams in the principal city in their region. I’d guess people in Maine follow the Sox for the same reason fans in much of the South pull for the Atlanta teams, or people across a stretch of the upper Great Lakes states are fanatical about the Packers, or fans all over the Rocky Mountain region are crazy over the Denver teams. All pro teams are regional teams to some extent.

Eclarim-it is one thing to stay true to your home town team, but that's just it-they ARE the home town team. You don't root for the next best thing. I have nothing ill against the Red Sox, it just seems to make more sense to me if Maine took a little more pride in it's college ball first. [quote, K-Luv]

Maybe some do, but it’s only natural that those who especially like pro sports are going to follow the teams in their region. In New England, that means the Boston teams.

There ya go. Watching them on television is a big thing. It’s only natural that you’ll get to like the team you see all the time as part of everyday life.

Of course then there’s the question of why people get fanatically excited about any sports teams. I’m a fan myself, and I’ve still never been able to answer that one.

Five games in today's update. And, believe it or not, I've been tracking the magic number since the middle of June. It started as a joke, when a friend needled me that as much of a fan as I am I should know the Sox' magic number. I took up the challenge and calculated the number. Once I had done that it kind of stuck in my head to keep track of it. As of now the magic number stands at 33. I'm getting nervous about this. The closer the get, the more nervous I get. Guess that marks me as a true Sox fan, huh?
