There were a few mensa candidates who ran generators in the house and didn't wake up during the '98 ice storm.

It came to me. Charlie Horne and Tom Morelli. There; Now I can sleep tonight. Even if you have not thought of a name for 13 years, as the old spaghetti sauce ad said, "It's in there."

The ice storm on 98, is that the one where the picture of the fire department trying to put out a fire, with the building completely incased in ice?

That was a very cool picture.

I think you may be thinking of the Bangor VFW or legion hall, just a few years ago.

Maineah: Yah, there's some who do that down here, as well no matter how many times they are told on the news, "Don't do that", people still do it. My favorite? When some people decided that since they didn't have power and since they didn't want to be outside, they would bring the BBQ grill INside! Hurray! We're having a BBQ!

They burned their house down.

Austin: Do you know if anyone has that pic or where I might find it?

All of your stories about people coming together and being so friendly....man, it's like night and day comparing how everyone acts up there to how people act down here. Night and day.

I've lived in areas where a lot of snow falls and accumulates and ice builds, as well as temps dropping below freezing....but I would assume that perhaps Maine winters are still harsher? I don't know. All I do know is that the state is beyond gorgeous and from what you all have described about the people, they are beyond beautiful.

Can. Not. Wait.

If I remember right, it was in the Bangor Daily News. But that only happened a few years ago, not in '98.

I remember Morelli coming on late in the storm swearing up and down about some local cop putting a parking ticket on his car!

I'll never forget, the last night of the storm broadcast found Jerry and someone else in the studio, winding down and lamenting about the events over the previous three weeks. He lightend up the mood by playing Dylan's "Shelter From the Storm."

It was the masonic hall. A friend of mine took this picture.

You would have to had been here to experience it. It was really eerie. In some places, the entire transmission system went down (literally to the ground.). There is a book about the storm and might be available if you search around. Mainers pulled together, taking in neighbors and and even strangers into their homes for shelter and warmth. Citizens came together to help people in their communities. Countless new friendships were formed. Everyone put their differences aside and helped each other out.

The following link contains excerpts from Jerry Evans' book. Tom Gocze, Scott Fish and Deb Plowmen are some of the other personalities on the air. There were all kinds of volunteers running supplies to the radio and power crews.

They and the callers, kept us informed, made us laugh and even cry. The entire broadcast was chock full of heart warming moments as well as heart wrenching calls for help, punctuated by periods of light hearted humor.
(Read Jerrys advice to a caller about putting the fish tank near the fire.)

"Four people died from storm-related injuries: one from a fall, one from a tree, two from carbon monoxide poisoning. More may have died, if it were not for the survival guidance from the WVOM crew, broadcasting by candlelight from a Bangor basement. WVOM became storm central, not only to the thousands of electricity-starved Mainers, but also to the power companies, police, sheriffs, government officials, and relief organizations. The station was, if not the eye of the storm, both its mouthpiece and its listening ear."
