What are your thoughts on the students who go to Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin? What are your thoughts on the schools in general? Why?

Also, for context, what part of Maine are you from?

would it change your answer? Just know this:I'm not a prospective student and I'm not going to use the information for anything other than my own curiosity. I've just heard that Colby and Bates have very poor locations with their towns(This seems to be less true for bowdoin). I'm just curious to see how their relations with the state as a whole(and its different sections) are.

All three are damn fine colleges. They do cost a lot, but they have excellent financial aid deals.

very fine colleges-all of them, as is others like husson and thomas
We looked at many colleges, for my son, many that have been mentioned- and many out of state my son decided on University of new england in biddeford- they have an excellent pharmacy program-
over 40k a yr!

Do your homework, for the student aid- and see what all the costs are- books, meals, etc,,,

Colby has a very pretty campus. Bowdoin's campus is nothing special. I've never been to Bates. All are good schools, but my daughter chose to go out of state.

They are all excellent colleges that I would be proud to have my kids attend.

I live in Portland, my parents live in Lewiston. I myself would choose Bowdoin if I was looking at location only.

thanks for all the posts, but like I said I am NOT a prospective student.
Can anyone comment on the strained relations the schools seem to have with the local communities and the state as a whole?

Not sure what it is exactly that you want. I am not aware of any issues that the schools and their communities have other than what could be found in any smaller town/city with a liberal arts college. I am sure some "townies" resent the "snobby kids with daddy's money" and some students look their down their noses at the locals, but really, it would be no different than in any other similar area.

What kind of students go to these schools? Smart, as they are quite competitive. Other than intelligence or some special attributes that would get them to a top school, I doubt there are too many defining characteristics.
