As a native Madisonian who lived in California for 15 years and will return there for retirement... there are places in California that are more conservative than Madison. They're not in the major metro areas but they are pretty conservative.

And - as a native Madisonian who lives in democratic leaning Salt Lake County yet conservative Utah - you can make friends ANYWHERE.

Madison is "liberal" because a lot of the employment are low paying jobs and government type of jobs.

A ton of UW Madison graduates stay in town to work when they graduate. The smart ones leave to make something of themselves.

Madison gets "outdone" by the burbs in Milwaukee.

WI is becoming more conservative in voting politicians.

When folks move to urban areas where there are lots of educated folks — many of whom have traveled widely and studied widely — it's inevitable they'll encounter ideas considered liberal by some more isolated segments of society. Expose yourself. It's fun.

Yes, in becoming more conservative they are losing even more educated younger people to other metros and states. It's called the brain drain. Milwaukee suburbs are actually much older in terms of average age. Fewer younger people are staying or moving there.

The "brain drain" thing is more than 20 years running. The Twin Cities is loaded with Cheesehead transplants for that reason.

It doesn't matter if Madison is liberal or conservative because it would still suck either way.

Oh really. There must be other reasons why it had the fastest job growth and population growth of any county in Wisconsin over the past 10 years. Facts must not matter.

It can have all the growth it wants. It's still a sterile and dull city, and it's reflected in its citizens as well.
