I'm a network administrator/engineer in Austin Texas that's originally from the Madison area looking to move back up north to be closer to family and friends. Ideally I would like to be near Madison, but I also have many good contacts in the St Louis, MO area, which is only about 6 hours away. Just wondering if anyone can give me an idea of what the job market is like for IT professionals in and around Madison. I already know it's extremely good in the St Louis area, with many large IT companies and salaries (for my position) averaging between $65k and $80k, but if the market is decent at all in Madison and I can get at least around $60k, it would be worth it to be back home.

The economic recovery has been slower in WI than elsewhere. If you're looking for better nearby markets, MN might be a better option. Still, those pay ranges don't seem at all unrealistic for network admin jobs, so it certainly is worth looking hereabouts. Just keep in mind that the cost of living can be surprising to some unless you head out to the exurbs. It seems pretty average to me, and when I moved here from Michigan, I appreciated the lower home property tax.
