Hi Everyone in Louisville. My family and I have lived in Louisville for approximately 9 years and then we were transferred to Wisconsin and are now looking to transfer back to Louisville. My questions is does anyone know if anything has been resolved on that school situation? I have looked on the school site and it doesn't give any information that anything has changed on the busing or applying to school or that whole confusing thing it has always been. Thanks!

JCPS board has voted to accept a plan. The courts have not spoken, yet, but quite simply, the big winner even with the new plan will be the school bus and tire manufacturers, oil refiners, and driver training instructors. Students do not win!!!

They are still finalizing the new plan. The board did just vote to use the "contiguous cluster" plan that was one of its proposed options:

Based on your residency address, you will be placed within one of these clusters and that cluster contains all of the possible schools that your child might attend. Unfortunately the next vote (when a lot more specifics will be decided) is not until May 29. There are also a few district-wide magnet schools that will not be part of a regular cluster but will be open for application from across the county.

What ever happened to a child attending the nearest elementary school to where they live? What is the purpose of putting a child on a bus for 30 minutes when there is a school within walking distance? Integration? Busing doesn't change students' eagerness to learn, or lack thereof. Do these school boards ever consider education, rather than politics? Changing the building to which a student goes doesn't necessarily give him a better education, but it does give politicians a bragging point.

Instead of spending resources on busing, put the money into raising the education level of the deficient schools. Offer higher salaries to draw better teachers. Give the schools the proper supplies to teach art and music. Supply the schools with computers to spark students' imagination. If students have a willingness to learn, they will learn no matter where they are. If parents don't participate in a child's education, sending him to a school across town will accomplish nothing, especially at the elementary level.

What the heck is a magnet school?

B-b-b-b ut you don't understand. Race is deciding the US presidential election so how can you expect there to be any rational, logical, and reasonable management of our governments at the local level?

Here's some info
Parents (http://www.jefferson.k12.ky.us/Parent/Index.shtml - broken link)
As far as the bussing, yes it was to create diversity but causes a frustratingly long bus ride for some kids.

Thank you for the link, missymomof3. I can see that the Board of Education is well aware of a core problem in today's general educational system in the United States, and Support Services/Programs and Parent Involvement education will hopefully diminish theis problems....if the parents are willing to participate.

However, I stand my ground about the use of busing to solve the educational needs of elementary students. Elevate the offerings in deficient schools. The average child will enjoy his school experience, and continue though graduation. Give a child the instruments to succeed and he will do so, no matter where he is.

What a brilliant plan by the JCPS It's like re-wrapping the same Christmas present. It appears that the JCPS administration will do everything in their power to defy the Supreme Court ruling. No wonder why so many folks recommend putting their kids in the Parochial system or moving out to the exurb counties of Oldham,Shelby and Bullitt.
