I'm curious what was going on the weekend you wrote this (june 6). I checked Travelocity for Saturday Sept 9 and there was plenty of availability at downtown hotels in the $114 - $179 range. These are name brand hotels like Sheraton, Hilton, Fairfield, Holiday Inn and Aloft.
It's the same range for the following weekend, so this is not entirely last minute specials.
