My husband transfers to Louisville on Wednesday, and I'm having the worst time finding a place to rent for us. I had one that I was really hopeful for, but already had applicants... wash, rinse, repeat.

I've been scouring the web, reading here, and other websites with information, and I was really wanting to find a place in St. Matthews, but it isn't happening with what we need.

My husband actually will be working in Clarksville, IN. We don't want to live in a small little town, but I haven't found anything in those surrounding areas ether, Floyd Knobbs, New Albany, Jeffersonville...

We want to live in Louisville area, and want to live close-ish to him getting to work, his hours would give him rush hour on the commute to work, but not on his drive home. How bad would the traffic be going North on I64/65 depending where we are located.

And the questionnaire:

-Where you are working - Clarksville, IN

-How much you are willing to spend on housing - prefer under $1500 rent, and it *has* to have at least 4 bedrooms. We are not a small family.

-How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate- Not more than 25 minutes if possible, but for the right house...

-If you have kids: Private school or public school- We homeschool, but want an area with a good/decent school district, and a neighborhood with children to play with

What type of neighborhood environment you are looking for: a place like St. Matthews, has amenities that you don't have to go far for but isn't in the heart of the city. And not near a college, we are past the party days and want to settle in with our kids. We have visited the St. Matthews area and really liked the charm of the houses, but we also don't mind newer construction.

-Community amenities important to you Just want to be able to get to a park, grocery store without it taking forever, walking distance would be fun, but not necessary

Also zip code recommendations would be helpful as well, I've seen a few that don't look bad, but I'm not sure of what zip codes are what really.

Default similar situation

I feel your pain. My husband has been offered a job in Louisville. But finding a decent place to rent that's affordable, in a good area and has good schools seems very difficult so far. Best of luck to you and your family.

We are in a similar situation. My husband just got word from his boss that they want us to relocate to Louisville from San Antonio, TX right away. We need to find a comfortable rental home, near good schools, in a safe/nice area and there sure isn't much to choose from. I'm pulling my hair out trying to sift though all the information and come up with some viable options.

We need to get there and get settled before school starts.

Just my personal opinion, but the Indiana side of the Ohio River (where the taxes are lower) seems trashy (with only a few isolated places that are ok) would never recommend anyone move to the Louisville KY area if they can help it....when you go to the Louisville KY side of the Ohio River, your looking at paying a 2.25% city tax, plus personal property tax on your car (which can amount to $1,000. or more annually if you have a nice new car) in addition to the cost of licensing and registration, plus Kentucky's graduated income tax which goes up to 6%....not to mention the sales tax rate of 6% plus whatever rate some cities and counties might be adding in sales tax also.........Government workers in Kentucky must be living real well at the expense of the tax payer who is going poor.....(but, what do I know maybe the most of the U.S. is turning into a third world country with all the taxes the States and the Feds suck down) however lastly I must add the people in Kentucky are very nice friendly people

My suggestion is the Waterford apartments (Bowling Avenue and Browns Lane) or Mallard Crossing (Bowling Avenue & Browns Lane). Just drive a block to Hubbards Lane and go all the way down over the railroad tracks and you'll be at Kroger's Grocery Store. If you go down Bowling Avenue to Breckenridge Lane, take a left and go all the way down and you'll hit I-264E or I-264W. Or take a left on Dutchman's Lane and go to Cannons Lane and take a right. Go all the way down and on the left is I-64W and I-64E. Hope this helps.

There are a lot of Corporate transfers to the Louisville area right now, many of the decent apartments have waiting lists. I would suggest that you check the internet for apartments and then call to find out if the ones that you like have availability before you start driving around. Good luck :-)
