Because it beats the hell out of industrial sprawl there. Just take a ride down Hwy 90 toward New Iberia to see what I mean. What a waste of beautiful land would that be? Lafayette is growing like mad, and not every residential development will be a TND like River Ranch. The southside, including Broussard and Youngsville, have become congested with the very sprawl of which you speak, so its nice to see residential development spread in a different direction for once. And a beautiful direction at that. YES, congestion in that area will follow at some point.

Alternative?

I know from reading your posts that you much prefer a more urban style of living, but many others do not, and quite enjoy the suburban lifestyle. Nothing wrong with that. Just a different mindset. When you have a family with kids who want a big back yard, you may rethink things.

There are no real zoning restrictions here, so you wont really see generic suburbia as much. There is a pretty good mix of house types and very few of the gigantic collector street mcmansions. You'll find much more of that on the Southside, but it is still more of a rarity. We do appreciate our greenery and you can see that reflected by the large amount of trees and shrubs in the city and surrounding areas. This is not a concrete jungle and I'm fairly certain Lafayette will not allow it to become that.
