DH being offered a job at Ft. Polk. I guess we will live in Alexandria, but we know nothing about the area. Any input would be great! I homeschool my twelve yr. old daughter and have a sixteen yr. old son. He loves to hunt and fish. He is trying to find out about hunting in Ft. Polk and the surrounding areas. Where to hunt and what to hunt? How is the duck hunting? What aobut geese? hog? deer? any and all advice from other rednecks out there would be great!!!! Thanks.

Alexandria is about an hour drive from Fort Polk. Highway 28 West, which runs between Leesville and Alexandria, is in the process of being four laned. The economy in the Alexandria area is growing with a large amount of residential and business growth occuring along the 28 West corridor. The nicest places to live are the west and southwest parts of Alexandria, Pineville (Alexandria's twin city on the northeast bank of the Red River) and surrounding areas, Woodworth (a suburb to the south), or the outlying areas west of Alexandria (such as Kincaid Lake). Alexandria does have high crime, but much of the crime is concentrated on the east side of Alexandria.

There are plenty of good places to hunt and fish throughout Central Louisiana. I'm not sure if there are any good places to duck hunt specifically near Fort Polk. Catahoula Lake (in south LaSalle Parish just east of Pineville) is the best place for duck hunting around here. Deer hunting is very popular and there are good deer hunting locations all throughout the area.

The Toledo Bend area can meet your hunting needs. If your boy likes to hunt so much you should think of buying a little land. I can sell you some direct access to North Toledo Bend--where the best duck/geese hunting in the world can be found. Moderator cut: how right you are! no ads The flyway on the North end is tops.

I work at Pensacola Christian College. Have written for ABeka Books--which has a massive home school program.
