As an expatriate of Louisiana now living in Little Rock,(by way of HK), its eye opening how other states view LA and its evident poor state of affairs in terms of its politics, education, economy and race relations. I came across this editorial tidbit in the "Arkansas Times" weekly newspaper:
__________________________________________________ _______________
Wake up, Louisiana

The New York Times writes of Louisiana's new governor, “He takes over what is now the nation's poorest, most uneducated, and most unhealthy state.” (And one deficient in natural beauty, we might add, though there's little the new governor can do about that.) If Bobby Jindal is to uplift Louisiana, he must reorder the state's priorities. Louisiana children remain hungry, sick and illiterate while the state gives all its resources, and all its love, to the football team at Louisiana State University. Let Bobby Jindal say “The money that's been spent on football scholarships and weight rooms will now be used for textbooks and free lunches in the schools. Louisiana will no longer tolerate the squandering of its resources on frivolous athletic competitions. Geaux Tigers, and I mean that literally.” If he says that, he'll be remembered.

Could this be true? That at the forefront of Louisiana's resurgance is its college football team and its chance to be number one in the nation and that this is this all that truly matters. Seems so to outsiders. Hey I watch LSU and 'expect' them to win every week like everyone else, but it this all that LA has to offer ...a winning college team. Just wanted to know what ya' think.

To be politically incorrect about it, this article is full of cr8p. This line is especially condescending: "....Louisiana children remain hungry, sick and illiterate while the state gives all its resources, and all its love, to the football team..." For one thing, EVERY state has poor people. For another, there are gummint programs like food stamps, Medicaid, and the Charity Hospital system. And if we are passionate about LSU football because they're winning, so what ?
