Slidell is OK it's just not one of my favorites. I don't think the schools are quite as good as Mandeville / Covington (but still better than NO). The crime is probably a little worse. A lot of people went there after Katrina including some of the bad element. I know there are some good areas and some not so good areas.

There was a pretty good bit of flooding in Slidell during Katrina but unlike in NO, it was in and out in a day so it didn't hang around for a month. Some of the flooding made it almost all the way to I-12 in a couple of areas but I'm not sure exactly where. There are a couple of areas closer to the lake that are more susceptible to flooding and are in the news every couple of years as a result. Can anyone else think of the names of those neighborhoods?

I wouldn't rule out Slidell but definitely ask a few more questions to make sure you would be in a good spot.

Slidell is terrible. It is like little New Orleans. The people have bad attitudes, crime is worse, traffic sucks and it feels more like a city than the Covington/Mandeville area. I would stick with there except I thin you are gonna have a hard time finding a house like you want for under $1000. Ponchatoula is very cute, more ryral and you might be able to find something there. Good luck!!

Slidell, LaCombe, Mandeville, Covington are all on the North side of Lake Ponchetrain. Any of those would be nice places to live and be close to the gulf after you cross the lake. Where will you park your boat? They have a nice marina in slidell. 30 minute drive over the causeway and you're in New Orleans.

Jesus Christ I wouldn't think Albany would be that expensive to live in!

I'd hope that, within the three years since they posted this thread, they've found a place to stay.

I know there are some good areas and some not so good areas.

I've lived in Pecan Island, Lafayette, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Austin, Houston, Sierra Blanca, Indianapolis, South Bend, Columbus OH, San Fransisco, San Jose, Clearwater, Dunedin and a few other small unknown towns, as well as another country... and every single one of those places resemble your remark... except Pecan Island.

Everytown, USA has "good areas" and "not so good areas" has been my experience.
