I am planning a trip to LA & may be traveling solo. Do you think it's safe for an early 20s female to walk from the Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach/main street alone? Way before dark, of course. I've heard it's quite sketchy at night, but you just see a bunch of "interesting" but harmless characters during the day.

The beach area it self is fun and in public with many other visitors/locals around so that is very safe. I wouldn't wander into venice neighborhoods (housing away from beach area) unnecessarily as a female alone unless you know your way around or are visiting somebody.

A better way to travel from the pier to Venice is by roller blades or bike.

Is there a place to rent bikes? That sounds like it would be a lot of fun! I don't mind walking, though, as I am used to running long distances.

there are plenty of places in both venice and santa monica to rent bikes. the easiest is probably at the parking lot for the venice pier at the end of washington blvd. it's only 3 miles between the two piers, so bike riding between the two is pretty easy.
