Hi Pugtales,

LA is huge, so we would need more information to really be helpful. Where will you be working? What amount of money are you able to spend? Are you interested in the Westside, or the Southbay or the Valley or inland? These areas are all vastly different from each other, but all of them have wonderful things to offer as well as drawbacks. What do you hate about Vegas? That might help too, so that we can tell you where to avoid here that would push the same buttons LOL.

Take this advive, stay away from inner-city LA. Unless its Beverly Hills, ceratin parts of Hollywood, and others.

I say stay away from inner-city LA because gangs are prevalent there. Plus these Latino gangs think they run this town, although the law enforcement out here is trying to weed them out.

Just do your research before you get here and you will thank yourselves and so will your kids. Trust me.

Some areas can vary street to street, so be very careful about doing your research. You might want to see what the neighborhood is like at all times of the day and night (if it's quiet during the day, it might be full of activity at midnight!). Also, there are many micro climates here, which is why it can be foggy and in the 60s along the coast, and then you drive 20 miles inland and it's 25 degrees warmer. Something to consider!

I lived in Vegas from '98 to '01. I moved there for work. I left because I couldn't stand it anymore. Yes...give us some more info about where you work and what you like to do in your free time. Regarding safety, you'll find most of L.A. much less scary than Vegas. You'll enjoy nice weather, culture and people are much nicer.

Los Angeles has affordable areas. Anywhere you go there are the good and the bad. And yes, Compton does have a good area as well. You just may want the cheapest place in the nice area.
