Initially, focus your search in El Segundo and Redondo Beach. You may find something in Manhattan Beach or Hermosa Beach as well. Any of those south bay cities will keep you 30-mins from Hawthorne. If you want to widen a little bit, but not go way over the 30-min commute, you can look in Torrance as well. For each of these cities, the further west you go, the better. As for Redondo and Torrance, look in the southwestern sections for the best areas.

Also, your focus should be on how good the High Schools area. All of those areas have very good school systems. But, as with most of southern cal, the high schools reflect a wider rating range than the elementary schools do. Each of the towns listed above have their own school districts and are not part of LAUSD.

Try Westchester or Culver City.

Good luck!

If your budget can find you a place, try west of the 405 San Diego Freeway, due West is El Segundo, then Manhattan Beach south of El Segundo, Torrance to the South, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach. That is preferable, if you must go North for budget, Westchester is okay in some areas. Whatever, stay out of Hawthorne.

yes, it will be much higher than NM. I would suggest you check into Torrance. They have good schools and it is close to Hawthorne. There are some beach areas as well but they will probably be out of your price range.

Good luck, Hawthorne is a pretty nice little town, but as you have said, rentals will be much higher.
