My wife are staying in Marina del Rey next week, and will be leaving the morning of Friday the 23rd to start the drive back up to Oregon.
My question is, how bad will the traffic be leaving town?
Any suggestions on the best way to get out of Dodge, and back to I-5?
Thanks

I would leave at 5AM. Check mapquest for the best route. You want to leave early to avoid traffic in Santa Barbara as well. But yeah, I'd just pack everything the night before, roll out of bed really early and get going. Besides, it's always fun to be on the road when the sun is coming up!!

If you leave before 5:30 AM you will be fine. Take 405 N to 5 N then drive for about ten hours.

The drive from Vegas hasn't been bad at all the last couple times I've done it. In November 2005 I left at 1 PM at got to La Canada at 5:30. The only congestion was on the 210 between the 605 and 134. Then in August 2006 I left at 10:30 AM and got to Rosemead at 2:00 PM. Again, the traffic only started when I hit the 605 interchange on the 10 West. Those were on a Thursday and Friday, respectively. And yeah, I drive fast as hell on that 15

There is a website to see what traffic is like all through Los Angeles at all times of the day/week:

http://www.trafficpredict.com

for instance, if you click on Friday, you get this map:
http://www.trafficpredict.com/index....ime=1176472800
and can see how the traffic is over the 7am to 8am time slot.

I was going to give some advice, and then realized...this person already took his trip in March and we are still commenting on it.

Plus, I don't know why you'd be worried about avoiding Santa Barbara traffic when you're going up the 5...

I drive up to SFO a few times a year and only leave L.A. at 5am to beat the traffic. Leaving after 5am, takes all of the fun out of it.
405 north at La Cienga is the start of the clog just a few minutes later in the morning.
Click the "Traffic" button at maps.google.com to see the traffic load.

Its best to take 405 at 5am to i5 to 580 west and then after Oakland the San Rafael bridge back to 101. That will skip lots of silly slow downs. I've used that route for many years to get to Santa Rosa.
