How much money do you have? I really like Downtown, Signal Hill (technically its own city) and the Belmont Shores/Naples area, but they're all ridiculously expensive. More suburban areas like Lakewood, Del Amo and western Cerritos along the 605 are cheaper and not too bad in terms of safety/good schools.

There are many very nice areas in LB but it's a big place and every neighborhood has a unique feel. You really need to visit to determine what is best for you. Below are some of my favorites.

coastal - belmont shore, naples, peninsula, belmont park, belmont heights

suburban - bixby knolls, virginia country club, el dorado, los altos, park estates

Cerritos is AWESOME! Great Civic Arts Plaza, wonderful public library, good shopping, BEST SCHOOLS in the area (ABC School District). Has a community college.

Some areas of Lakewood are nice; older area; very established.

My cousin is LBPD officer and she wouldn't go there if she didn't have to! She lives in Lakewood.

Rossmoor is really nice.

Cypress (Orange County; but really "doable" in terms of commute to Long Beach) is really nice, too.

Personally, I'd stay out of most parts of Long Beach. Quite a gang problem as well. Many other areas nearby are much nicer and safer.

Stay safe.

If I'm not mistaken, Gahr and Cerritos are two of the best public high schools in the area. Tons of diversity and great Indian and Chinese food in that area as well.

Cypress, Los Alamitos, Rossmor (high end suburb of Los Alamitos) and Seal Beach are all fairly nice areas in northwestern Orange County that are relatively close to Long Beach.

Gahr less so, but Cerritos is good.

Technically, Whitney and Oxford are the two best in the area(but they are test in). Los Alamitos, Cerritos, Long Beach Poly, Pacifica, Kennedy, and some others in the local area are all good as well. Millikan, Lakewood, Gahr, Mayfair, and Wilson aren't bad either. The key is to stay out of the Paramount district schools and Norwalk Unified. The private high schools in the area are all pretty good as well(St John Bosco, Valley Christian, St Joseph)

From a historical/architectural standpoint, LB Poly is a gorgeous school. Apparently its used a lot for filming. Football team is usually one of the top programs in the state.

Much of Long Beach is quite nice, actually. The gangs don't run the entire city. I lived there for a few years. The center of town should be avoided (around Orange and Anaheim up to PCH, as I recall), but we lived in Belmont Heights near Redondo as well as on Spring near Woodruff, which is a very suburban, safe area. Can't speak for the West side of town, but the area around CSULB is great, not to mention Bixby Knolls.

West side is mostly industrial (what with the ports of LB and LA) and I wouldn't be surprised if most people confuse San Pedro's crime/gang problems with Long Beach.
