Hi everyone

Right now I'm sitting here in exciting Dayton, Ohio waiting for my next assignment in El Segundo. It's freezing, rainy, and windy outside here, and I am bored out of my mind right now so I thought I might ask this...

I'm moving to either El Segundo or Manhattan Beach in the spring. One of my things is to walk and explore around. I go on walks regularly (when the weather permits) sometimes for 4-7 miles. I'll most likely be between Playa Del Rey and Redondo Beach on or near the Strand. I just wanted to know if there are there any concerns walking later in the evening in these areas? I'm 6' tall, 180 lbs fyi...thought that might be relevant.

I discovered the hard way downtown Dayton is dangerous at night. I was on the Riverscape and was chased for about a half mile by a man who was literally out of his mind. I later found it it was a high crime area. Since then, I've avoided that area and I've been carrying pepper spray on my walks. Is that legal to have in LA?

Common sense suggests risk/reward of walking post-dark in any place on planet (incl upscale suburbs of Chicago, BH, etc) is not particularly smart

Many walk/pace indoors at home....many workaholics are constantly pacing in front of their computer screens while they might be on phone or pondering data, etc

I wouldn't be too concerned about walking around Manhattan Beach or El Segundo. Those are both pretty upscale coastal cities that lots of people enjoy taking walks at because of the great weather. Look at the city-data crime index for Manhattan Beach and El Segundo for example. The US average score is 320.6. Manhattan Beach scores 164.5 (this is very good). El Segundo scored 260.2. Dayton on the other hand scores 699.1!!! I think you will find Coastal L.A. much safer than Dayton.

This is good to know, especially since there is so much to explore there! That's about half of what I did when I visited coastal LA the last two times. I'd drive to an area, park my car, then walk around...albeight during the day. It seemed to be the best way to get a feel for the area.

*I remember hearing jets often in El Segundo. However, everywhere I've been stationed I hear jet noise! We have C-5's in Dayton.

Do you know how much the average townhouse rental might be in Elsegundo? Ive been there. I liked it alot. I was on a bus. Turned out the driver was from like, 6 miles from me here in NJ. He told me they call Elsegundo Mayberry because nothing ever happens there.
