I currently work in New York City and live in Long Island New York.
I have an opportunity to relocate for my current employer to California.

My job would be based in Pasadena California.

I currently rent my home and pay $1400 month for 3 br home (not including utilities). I have 2 school age children (11 year old in 5th grade and 8 yr old in 2nd grade).

I do not know much about living in California. I have enjoyed the times when I have visited for work.

I am looking for anyone to PLEASE provide me with any information concerning areas to live for families, good schools. Ideally I would rent for the 1st yr or so until I was settled in.

Thank you for reading this posting and thank you to anyone who can provide me with information.

Have an awesome day !!!

If your budget is only 1400, I would not move here.

Unless your new salary will allow you to double what you currently pay for housing, or you are willing to downgrade to a 2BR apartment (approx. $1800/mo in a decent area, which doesn't necessarily mean decent schools), you cannot afford to take the job. I would also hesitate to leave Long Island, which I understand has some great public schools, to bring children to the LA area, with its very hit-or-miss school districts. South Pasadena schools have an excellent reputation, but it is a very expensive place to live. Pasadena schools, on the other hand, are fair-to-middling...and really, really old and ugly.

If you are willing to commute a bit, you can swing something close to that payment but will have a commute and fuel costs to contend with. Great areas for families and decent schools include La Verne, San Dimas, Glendora. This area along the foothills is called the San Gabriel Valley; there are quite a few posts on this board that detail those areas.

First start by zeroing in on an area that fits your budget; that seems to be the gating factor in your decision.

LALife.com is a good macro-view of the region ... do some digging there and craigslist to get a sense of rents in the area. As Katenik stated, if you are willing to do an apt or even a townhome, you can probably swing it.

Good luck.
