ikea is fine for someone just starting out in an apartment. don't expect to pass down anything you buy there to your grandchildren, but it will last as long as you need it to. i've had items purchased there for six years and counting. just make sure to choose pieces made of solid wood, not particle board.

OK it is not hard to assemble a piece of furniture. It takes me 15 - 45 min depending on how big the piece is. If you want inexpensive, also try thrift stores like Goodwill, they get nice pieces because lot of it come from families of deceased elderly people.

I LOVE Ikea. Lol! When I moved into my dorm sophomore year, I bought a bedside table from there. I spent about three hours assembling it, only to find halfway through that I'd put one piece of wood on backwards. But I managed fine in the end, treated myself to some ice cream, and the table is still standing, two years later. When I left and was giving furniture away, I said to a few of my guys friends "Who wants the table?" They were all like "I'll have it, I want that one." Then I looked at it lovingly and said "I built this with my own two hands".....and they started pointing at each other saying "Oh he can have it, I think I already have one."
I do believe it currently resides in their living room....
Just my pointless little Ikea story!
But....I did calculate that I could furnish a whole apartment for less than $1000. So thats my plan.
