Broadcast and basic cable TV are in a major decline.
LA is not a typical news market. Being the entertainment capital of the world it has always had showy newscasts with flashy anchors. The few that tried to compete with a more serious approach failed. So what do you do in this competitive situation? You try to equal the flash.

Well, the flashy anchors are gone. KTLA has boring people.

Maybe, but LA tv news still is different from most stations north or east of California. The lead with bleed has diminished but the overall structure is doing stories that involve crime or traffic, or scandal. Compare that with Seattle, Portland, maybe even San Francisco.

Never liked Sam Rubin. We have stopped watching KTLA. New management and we liked Lynette and Mark on the weekends. Loved it when Barbara Beck was on it...many moons ago.

Sam Rubin, a veteran journalist who anchored KTLA’s entertainment coverage for more than 30 years, died Friday (5/10/24) in Los Angeles. He was 64.

KTLA news anchor Frank Buckley confirmed Rubin’s death early Friday afternoon. Fighting back tears as he announced the news on the air, Buckley called his colleague’s death “shocking” and “hard to comprehend in the moment.”

“Quite simply, Sam was KTLA,” he said, adding later, “The newsroom is in tears right now.”

“Sam was a giant in the local news industry and the entertainment world, and a fixture of Los Angeles morning television for decades,” KTLA said of Rubin in a statement shared on social media. “His laugh, charm and caring personality touched all who knew him.”

I forgot I ever said that about him. I decided later he wasn't a joy to watch. But he was a pro and now KTLA is even more lacking in quality on-air talent.
