While I personally am not from LA, I have enough family & friends who are that it resonates. He was something special even amongst his peers. He will be missed sorely

Kobe is not only an icon of the LA Lakers but he is also an icon of the city of Los Angeles and an icon of the United States of America. For a person with such athleticism, perseverance and personality, this is a reality that is too hard to accept. Honestly, until now I still can’t believe everything that has just happened today.
Agreed. That's exactly what I told my wife about how it reminded me of when MJ died. I was actually at UCLA that day too. It was crazy.

Kobe is a bigger star than most Hollywood Celebrities...especially in Southern California and he is certainly more popular in SoCal than the current POTUS.

He isn't a native Angelino, but he's been part of the LA community since 1997. So of course the coverage is going to be big as this hits hard with many.

Some things are better off not sharing... Don't tune in. It's not that difficult.

Met Kobe several times before the championships. Very polite off the court. A different animal on it. RIP, Mamba.

This is really heartbreaking. Kobe was by far the biggest sports star from LA in my generation.

And you felt the need to share this with everyone, why? If you don't want to hear about it change the channel.

Apart from his and his daughter's death, 7 other local community members, also involved in sports, died with him so its a big deal in SoCal news coverage.

It was foggy yesterday.
Other helicopters didn't fly.

I guess a pilot can't say "No" when he flies for a very rich client.

^^ That really sucks, I wish they would have delayed by just one hour and they would have been fine. Yesterday was quite nice after 11.
