Yikes.

So the article says it doubles as state route 2? What does that mean? Trying to figure out exactly where that happened on google maps.

What I'm looking to do here is basically drive & pull over for great views. Also have thought about stopping by some of the small towns out that way. Somebody on another forum mentioned stopping at Wrightwood. I've been to LA area a lot in last 6-7 years so just trying to do something different than the average day in LA area.

Can you drive/park at the observatory?

Seems like I have two options. Drive up route 2 or route 39. But like I mentioned with route 39 it ends because of the road ending so if I went that route I could stop at Crystal Lake but then would have to come back down. Versus going up route 2 and going all the way to the other side of the mountain.
Why not make a trip to Mammoth ? Beautiful lakes up there- plenty of hiking..

Traveling in that area should be fine by next spring.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do like hiking but not going to be able to do it this trip. But that area is to far north. I need a place that I can get to in 2-3 hours. Hoping to drive to the mountains one day to fill in a vacation day.

Joshua Tree, Tahquitz Canyon, Indian Falls has nice scenery but you'd need 2 days

Depends on the weather but you want to take 38 from Redlands for the best scenary. By April it will be completely clear of snow, but often is in the winter too depending on the recent weather.

I looked this up on google maps. I would love a better view but Redlands seems to be a bit further out East than going up at Azusa. I guess maybe jumping on the 10 could make it not as bad time wise.

Any idea how much of additional driving time it would be to go up at Redlands vs Azusa.

Totally different areas. It’s 50 miles from Azusa to Redlands. Additionally it will take an hour and a half to get up the mountain to big bear, though that hour and a half is the reason for making the trip.

Thanks. I would be coming from Redondo. So I looked at Redondo to both places. To Azusa it's around 43 miles but to Redlands it's about 84. Big difference there which probably would keep me from doing it but appreciate the idea. Always another time.

Mountains are everywhere in LA.

There are beautiful views if you take the Los Liones trail above Malibu.
A smaller hike will take just an hour. Or you can hike father traveling over the Getty Villa.
