Terrence Whitten's four-month wait, while the apartment lay vacant, reflects a persistent failing of the countywide system to get homeless people into housing. Even before the novel coronavirus made every step of the process more difficult, apartments routinely remained vacant for 90 days or more, officials with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority acknowledge.

With an inventory of more than 10,000 units of supportive housing, each of which typically becomes vacant every seven years, the delay means that up to hundreds of units are vacant at any time waiting to be occupied by someone living on the street.

Interesting. One theory about the reason that the virus rate is so low among the homeless is that they live outside.

When the COVID-19 pandemic erupted, advocates predicted that a “time bomb” was about to go off in the homeless community.

Many homeless people live under conditions worse than those of a refugee camp, with health problems that predispose them to severe illness. Researchers feared they’d succumb in high numbers to the worst ravages of the disease.

But the powder keg has yet to go off. There has been little spread of the novel coronavirus in Los Angeles’ street encampments. Some shelters have had outbreaks, but most of those infected had no symptoms.

Of the more than 1,300 cases among homeless people in L.A. County, fatalities by mid-August stood at 31, a mortality rate comparable to or better than that of the overall population.

Have L.A.'s homeless people dodged a COVID-19 catastrophe?:

Default What do the LL of Skid Row and like streets do or how handle their RE investment

What do or how do the LL of streets like Skid Row handle their RE investment?

So they own this RE, but the whole area has been taken over by homeless encampments. Kind of hard to sell/rent the space. Do they just leave the buildings vacant? Do they get some kind of exemption from Govt because of dire situation? Do some of them rent space out to Govt to house the homeless?

Actually, I have to ask, are there actually regular people who live and rent/own on Skid Row, and similar streets, and just deal with the tents, and addicts everyday? Oh gosh, cant imagine anyone actually paying to live there.

Are they all bankrupted, or foreclosed properties then?

No, it's mostly industrial and warehouses. There are also shelters, low income housing, and a few areas with small convenience stores and wholesalers. There are some vacant buildings, but not the majority.

I had a customer that owns a warehouse close by. He maintains door locked and he’s got a rabid german shepherd running around his warehouse.
