Brentwood is not urban. Yeesh. And because much of LA proper is medium density, the distinction between a suburb (separate government, like Culver City) and suburban area (Studio City, as an example) is blurred. I would offer that cities such as Pasadena and even Glendale are both suburbs of LA and their own entities, whereas West Hollywood is a separate place in name only.

Bevery Hills, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Culver City are all independent cities and are more "urban" than much of the San Fernando valley, most of which is an part of the city of Los Angeles. There are tons of urban and suburban areas in Los Angeles, but unlike other cities, the city limits of LA do not really define "uban" and smaller surrounding cities may not be especially suburban.

"And despite what the movies tell you, there isn't a Beverly Hills Police Department (I'm almost sure of that, actually...). "

There most certainly is!
