Of course, neighborhoods in LA will have a people that have a variety of occupations. But knowing that engineers usually have salaries that are on the upper income bracket, close to six figures for certain specialties like petroleum engineering, I was wondering if theres any neighborhoods in the city of Los Angeles proper that are known to have lots of engineers? Are they known to live in more affordable neighborhoods like Echo Park or do they have salaries that allow them to live in areas such as Beverly Hills?

There are a lot of engineering jobs in the South Bay, and probably a lot of engineers living in Redondo Beach and Torrance.

Not a lot of petroleum engineers in LA...more like aerospace/defense. El Segundo, South Bay, Torrance, etc.

Petroleum engineers I am just not sure. Refineries in Carson, Torrance, and Wilmington. So since that's South Bay I'll lump them with the aerospace engineers in el segundo and Manhattan beach.

Most likely to live in South Bay Area with good public schools if they can afford it ...Torrance, el segundo, Redondo.

If they can't afford that, some do live in bellflower, Lakewood, and the bordering parts of long beach. Still nice area and ok public schools but houses can be found $400-500k which is substantially less than South Bay.

I do not some make extraordinary commutes from places like south OC and from Anaheim hills. Requires adjusted hours, van pool, and I think it's oppressively brutal.

Thanks for all the great responses guys! I have a few more follow up questions.

JohnG72, are there any south OC cities in particular that you are referring to?

The south bay was mentioned a couple of times. If they wouldn't mind the commute, would engineers be able to live in more affluent communities such as Palos Verdes Estates?

A lot of responses have been about LA suburbs, but what about neighborhoods within the city of LA proper? Are any known to have a concentration of engineers living in them?

The few engineers that I know in Manhattan Beach aren't your typical staff engineers. They're usually upper management or consultants. I think Director-level is probably the lowest level manager I've met in Manhattan Beach, and not just for engineering. It's the same with Marketing and Finance managers as well.

There are also a few older engineers that bought their houses 20 or so years ago when the prices were closer to the regional median.

Pasadena area has lots of engineers that work at JPL, parsons, Jacobs, and tetra tech.

I live in San Pedro. Not far from work. Could just as easily live in OC though esp. Irvine area - cleaner, higher median household income. Look at the eng. job centers in the area - primarily El Segundo/Beach cities area, South Bay and Orange County. Pasadena and the SFV are other areas.

You realize that one could be an engineer by specialization but may have migrated to upper level/executive management - in that case he would be able to afford a decent property in RPV if looking to buy right now, otherwise not so much ... it is not so much the commute but the income/net worth of the engineer in question.
