I've already read that I have 10 days to get a new license. I won't have a car so I don't need to worry about registering my car.

I already know I'll have to do the written test but not a driving test.. And does anyone know where I can study for the written test beforehand?

I imagine the study guide is online in this day and age but you can always go by any DMV location and pick one up. Good luck, when I did it I waited like 45 minutes to learn if I passed.

I didn't have to take a written test when I got back to California from Texas. They just replaced my TX drivers license with a CA one. I don't know if they changed it in the last 5 years.

Maybe that was because at one point you'd already had a CA drivers license? I don't know the laws.

My wife and recently moved to CA from VA three weeks ago. We went to the DMV our first day of arrival and we transferred our vehicle registration AND we both had to take the written test in order to get our driver licenses. You can go here: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/home/dmv.htm?lang=en. Hover over "driver license", you can view the handbook online. The test consists of 38 questions (the questions are basic driving knowledge, prevention, etc- pretty easy and straightforward), and the fee is $32 per applicant. Hope this is helpful!

Please make an appointment. Do not go to the DMV without an appointment. I moved from DC a couple months ago and had to get everything transferred. You will also have to get a smog test for your car. Someone at the DMV should be able to give you a list of locations. There will probably be advertisements from smog check places right outside the DMV. You will also need your birth certificate. You won't be able to do anything without some form of official documentation proving you are a legal resident of the U.S.
