I am in LA for first time since 2003. I don't remember the smog being as thick as it is now. Not much visability of downtown buildings during drive up to Gllendale from LAX, I can barely see the hills from Brand Ave/Glenoaks. Visability is very poor in general.

Is this thick smog due to the recent fires or has it really gotten so much worse in 4 years?

People need to learn that not everything in LA is smog. Jeeze. We are a coastal city just like San Francisco-THERE'S SOMETHING CALLED FOG/MARINE LAYER. The fires were like a month ago-it's not that. Smog levels have gone down considerably every year. Just because LA is known for smog doesn't mean every time it's not perfectly clear it's smog.

This is smog.

This is fog in santa monica.

This is by my house-fog.

Thanks for the clarification. The driver (native Californian) called it smog, so I assumed he was correct. Others I have spoken with today said the same thing as you. Perhaps it's a bit of both

There is a natural haze in the L.A. area. If it's brownish, then it's smog. If not, it's just haze and/or the inversion layer. Or low clouds and fog.

It usually occurs during the summer when it's dry, hot, and there's no wind to push it out to sea.

Ok, I went to LA twice and it was in December. The smog wasn't very bad at that time. I heard that it is much worse in summer. By seeing this picture, I certainly believe it!!.. That can't be very good for one's health to be breathing this.
