Hi everyone! We are moving to LA this summer for my husband's job, which is in Redondo Beach. We most likely can't however, afford to live in Redondo Beach. We've been looking in Torrance, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, and San Pedro (although when we came down a few weeks ago, we found San Pedro to be a dump).

My 16 year old son needs to be in a continuation (alternative) high school because of credit deficiency and inability to thrive in the usual 7 classes per day/30-40 students per class model of most regular high schools. I haven't been able to get any information from the cont. high schools I've contacted. Does anyone know anything about this subject? Is there one that is better than the others? We have been planning on moving to Torrance as it seemed like the option that hits the most items on our wishlist: affordable, near the beach, commutability, weather, and shopping. But when I called the continuation high school in Torrance (Kurt Shery High School) they weren't very helpful and didn't sound like they needed or wanted another student.

We have also considered Long Beach, because they have their own school district, but the worst part of that is that we'd then have to live in Long Beach. It seems like most of the cities surrounding LA are in LAUSD which doesn't seem that great, but I'll go anywhere I have to in order to find a decent school for my kid. Anyone have any advice on where to go and how to go about getting him in?
